The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for deeper collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to curb electoral offences, promote voter sensitisation, and ensure the swift prosecution of offenders.
The appeal was made on Friday, August 8, 2025, when the new INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kwara State, Hale Gabriel Longpet, paid a courtesy visit to Daniel Isei, Director of the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate.
Longpet said the visit underscored INEC’s commitment to working closely with the EFCC to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process. He stressed that credible elections require collective efforts from all stakeholders to uphold transparency and accountability before and after polls. He expressed optimism that the EFCC’s involvement would significantly reduce vote trading and other forms of financial inducement.
In his response, Isei commended INEC’s role in safeguarding democracy and reaffirmed the EFCC’s readiness to support free, fair, and credible elections in Kwara State. He noted that combating corruption also involves tackling electoral malpractices such as vote buying, bribery, and other illicit acts that compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
