UN honors youth leadership, calls for greater support on international youth day

The United Nations has paid tribute to the determination, creativity, and leadership of young people worldwide in commemoration of International Youth Day.

Delivering the UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message at the Youth Summit in Lagos, the National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Abuja, Mr. Oluseyi Soremekun, lauded the role of youth in driving sustainable development, fostering inclusive societies, promoting peace, and advocating for a fairer, greener, and more just future.

Organised by the Strategy for Mentoring Initiative and Leadership Empowerment (SMILE) in collaboration with UNIC, the summit showcased the transformative power of youth-led innovation and underscored the need to invest in the ideas and initiatives of young people, particularly in Nigeria.

The event highlighted how young Nigerians are emerging as key agents of progress, urging governments, private sector players, and development partners to amplify their voices, support their initiatives, and provide enabling environments for their potential to thrive.

The UN’s message reaffirmed its commitment to working with and for young people, recognising them as vital partners in shaping a better world.
