The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the rescue of 15 additional persons from the tragic boat mishap that occurred on Sunday, August 17, 2025, in Kojiyo village, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
This brings the total number of rescued passengers to 25, while 25 others remain missing. NEMA Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, assured that search and rescue operations would be sustained and intensified.
The ill-fated canoe, carrying over 50 passengers to Goronyo Market, capsized on Sunday. Initial operations saved 10 persons, with the latest efforts adding 15 more. Authorities also recovered seven motorcycles from the river.
To facilitate the rescue, Goronyo Dam management has temporarily shut the dam for two days, allowing divers improved access to the site.
