Katsina Mosque Attack: Amnesty demands justice for slain worshippers

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to ensure justice for victims of the latest deadly attack in Katsina State, where gunmen killed no fewer than 13 worshippers in the early hours of Tuesday.

In the early hours of Tuesday, gunmen on motorcycles stormed Gidan Mantau community in Malumfashi Local Government Area and attacked a mosque, killing no fewer than 13 worshippers. Families of some victims reported that as many as 27 people may have been killed.

Amnesty International described the incident as further evidence of government failure to protect rural communities, noting that residents now live at the mercy of gunmen who strike with little resistance.

“These horrific killings show that security measures in Katsina are not working. The authorities’ failure to stem the violence is costing people their lives and livelihoods,” the organization said.

The rights group also warned that the surge in violence during the peak of farming season risks triggering a humanitarian crisis, as communities are being displaced and farmers forced to abandon their lands.

Despite repeated assurances by President Bola Tinubu that security agencies have been tasked to end the bloodshed, attacks on villages across Katsina and other parts of the North-West continue unabated.

Amnesty International urged the Nigerian government to act decisively, stressing that without urgent intervention, more lives will be lost.
