Police train 192 officers on cyber forensic solution, arrest three for online crimes

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in partnership with Radio Tactics Group Limited, has concluded a nationwide specialized training on the Athena Forensic Intelligence Solution (AFIS) to strengthen its capacity in combating cyber-related crimes.

According to Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the training, held between July 9 and August 15, 2025, equipped 192 officers drawn from the 36 state commands, the Federal Capital Territory, and 10 specialized formations with advanced digital, forensic, and intelligence-gathering skills.

Facilitated by experts from the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and Radio Tactics Group, the program focused on threat identification, extraction and analysis of communication and location data from SIM cards, GPS devices, satellite phones, and other mobile devices, including grey-market phones. Officers were also trained on biometric capture and the use of forensic hotlists to match intelligence records with operational data.

Meanwhile, operatives of the NPF-NCCC have arrested three suspects — Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke — in Abuja and Lagos for alleged cyberstalking, identity theft, and online fraud. Investigations revealed that the suspects hacked into a victim’s WhatsApp account on July 18, 2025, and attempted to extort ₦3 million by threatening to expose confidential information.

Forensic analysis led to their arrest, recovery of the hacked account, and the uncovering of a wider cybercrime network currently under investigation.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to adopting modern technological approaches to combat cybercrime, alongside continuous training and re-training of officers to align with global best practices.
