An explosion at the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Ordnance Factory disposal pit in Kaduna on Saturday, September 20, 2025, claimed one life and left several others injured.
The incident, which occurred around 10:00 a.m., happened during the disposal of expired ordnance materials, including primer caps and propellants, which had exceeded their lifespans.
According to a statement by DICON’s Public Relations Officer, Maria Sambo, the corporation had commenced controlled disposal of the expired items in July, successfully destroying all ammonia nitrates and most of the other stockpiled materials. The explosion occurred as specialists were finalising the destruction of the remaining items.
The injured personnel are receiving treatment at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, while the deceased has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
DICON expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that the situation was under control. The agency emphasized that operational safety remains a top priority and that the neighbouring community is not at risk.
A Board of Inquiry has been set up to investigate the immediate cause of the explosion.
