The Embassy of Switzerland, in partnership with the Create That Change Development Initiative (CCDI), has commissioned new toilet and library facilities at LEA Primary School, Sheritti, Kabusa, Abuja, to promote hygiene and inclusive learning in public schools.

The intervention, part of CCDI’s Public School Revival Initiative (PSRI), aims to restore pupils’ dignity and improve educational infrastructure in underserved communities.

Speaking at the commissioning, Mrs. Sharon Ayeni, Executive Director of CCDI, said the project was driven by the need to address the poor state of infrastructure in many public schools. “Access to clean toilets is a basic right, not a luxury. Every child deserves to learn in an environment that promotes both health and dignity,” Ayeni stated.

“Through the PSRI, we are not only building facilities but nurturing hope and expanding opportunities for young learners.”

She explained that the first phase of the initiative, supported by the Swiss Embassy, has delivered four toilet blocks and three libraries in select schools across the FCT. The programme, she added, serves as a model for collaboration between non-profit organisations and diplomatic missions to advance education and sustainable development.

Ayeni appealed to government at all levels to intensify efforts in maintaining school facilities and ensuring public schools meet minimum hygiene and safety standards.

In his remarks, Mr. Siamak Rouhani, Deputy Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, said the project reflects Switzerland’s long-standing commitment to supporting education and sustainable development in Nigeria. “Education is vital for children’s future. With good education, they can find jobs, contribute to their communities, and integrate successfully into the labour market,” Rouhani said.

He commended CCDI for its dedication and expressed optimism that the PSRI would extend to other states beyond the FCT.

The Head Teacher of LEA Primary School, Mrs. Afiniki Shekwagu, described the project as a huge relief, noting that pupils had long struggled with poor sanitation and inadequate learning resources. “The new toilets and library will not only improve hygiene and learning but also boost morale among pupils and teachers,” she said.

Shekwagu added that the school would implement a maintenance roster involving pupils to keep the facilities in good condition, while appealing for further support in areas such as classroom renovation, furniture, and learning materials.

Dr. Salamatu Manjalo, representing the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), praised CCDI for the initiative and pledged regular monitoring to ensure the facilities are properly maintained.

The event featured a tour of the new facilities, as well as poems and songs by excited pupils in appreciation of the donors.

The Create That Change Development Initiative (CCDI) is a non-governmental organisation committed to empowering communities through education, youth development, and social impact projects. Its Public School Revival Initiative continues to attract partnerships from both local and international bodies dedicated to promoting quality education and equal opportunities for Nigerian children.
