The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sympathy to the governments and people of Cuba, Jamaica, and Haiti following the widespread destruction and loss of lives caused by Hurricane Melissa.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, conveyed Nigeria’s condolences and solidarity with the Caribbean nations as they grapple with the aftermath of the deadly storm. “The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have received with profound sorrow and deep sympathy the news of the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa on our sister nations, the Republic of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica,” the statement read.
Nigeria described the scenes of devastation — including severe flooding, massive destruction of infrastructure, and tragic loss of lives — as heart-wrenching, while commending the swift and courageous efforts of emergency responders in the affected countries.
Reaffirming its commitment to South-South cooperation and long-standing ties with Caribbean nations, Nigeria extended heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The statement further urged the international community and development partners to provide urgent humanitarian and reconstruction support to assist the affected countries in their recovery efforts. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the governments and people of the Republic of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica,” the Ministry added.
