The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has called on President Bola Tinubu and northern governors to take proactive steps in preventing religious tension following Nigeria’s recent designation by the United States as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Isaac Abrak, the group cautioned that the development, if not carefully managed, could undermine years of interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims, particularly in the North.
Reacting to the public outcry that followed the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump, NCYP urged Nigerians to remain calm and embrace constructive dialogue. The group noted that rising social media reactions underscore the need for urgent domestic engagement to prevent escalation into religious misunderstanding or violence.
“We recall that Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and NCYP had earlier appealed to the U.S. Government not to list Nigeria as a CPC, warning that such a move could undermine the delicate interfaith reconciliation efforts built over the years,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, President Trump has still gone ahead and listed Nigeria; as such, we must not allow this fear to become reality.”
The NCYP commended President Tinubu for his inclusive approach to governance and ongoing efforts to address insecurity but urged greater protection for all citizens regardless of faith.
The group also expressed concern over the silence of many northern governors, urging the Northern Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, to work closely with the Presidency and other stakeholders in preserving peace, particularly in volatile areas.
NCYP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.
