Edo intensifies drug war, arrests seven in coordinated raids

The Edo State Government has ramped up its crackdown on illicit drug networks, arresting seven suspects — including a breastfeeding mother — during coordinated operations across Uromi, Ubiaja and Auchi in Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts.

The suspects, comprising three men and four women, were paraded on Thursday in Benin City by the Edo State Taskforce. Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Hon. Festus Ebea, said the arrests were the result of credible intelligence and targeted raids on identified drug hubs.

He confirmed that various quantities of illicit substances were recovered from the suspects, describing the evidence as “incontrovertible” and directly linking them to the sale and distribution of hard drugs.

The operation, executed on November 26, 2025, forms part of the Taskforce’s mandate to ensure a crime-free environment across the state.

“Our youths are increasingly being lured into drug abuse, which fuels deviant behaviour and criminal activities,” Ebea said. “Raids were conducted in Esan North-East, Esan South-East and Etsako West, where seven persons were arrested, including a breastfeeding mother.”

He added that the recovered exhibits tie the suspects to the distribution of harmful substances contributing to rising social vices. According to him, the government remains resolute in dismantling drug networks, restoring public safety and safeguarding young people from the dangers of narcotics.

Ebea said all suspects would be profiled and transferred to the appropriate authorities for prosecution, noting that the crackdown would be sustained.

“This operation is not a one-off effort. The Edo State Government will continue to smoke out drug dealers and criminals wherever they hide to ensure a peaceful and safe society,” he stated.

Reaffirming Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive to make Edo a drug-free state, the Commissioner said the Taskforce’s impact would be far-reaching. “We will take the fight to the doorsteps of both sellers and consumers,” he added.

Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Michael Anetor, expressed his team’s commitment to eliminating drug-related crime and thanked the Commissioner for his support. He warned others involved in the illicit drug trade to desist before the law catches up with them.

The government emphasized that the anti-drug campaign will continue until all communities across the state are safe, secure, and free from the scourge of narcotics.
