The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns linked to the use of unauthorised tinted vehicle windows.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the decision followed a review of prevailing security trends and the need to enhance public safety, pending the final determination of the matter before the court.
The police clarified that there was no court order restraining the Force from enforcing existing laws on tinted glass usage. However, enforcement had earlier been suspended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit application process without undue pressure.
According to the Force, recent intelligence and crime reports indicate an increase in criminal activities carried out with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Criminal elements were said to have exploited the reduced enforcement to conceal their identities while engaging in offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
In view of this development, the police said the resumption of enforcement had become necessary as a proactive step to protect lives and property across the country.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured members of the public that the renewed enforcement would be carried out with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights and strict adherence to the law. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety and the rule of law.
Motorists requiring tinted glass permits were advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with extant regulations.
