Rights activist and convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to proceed with the investigation and prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, despite what he described as attempts to portray the probe as politically motivated.
In a statement posted on his verified facebook page, Adeyanju described Malami’s claim that the EFCC is acting out of political vendetta and lacks the competence to investigate him as “unfortunate and misleading.” He insisted that the anti-graft agency should pursue its mandate without hesitation, particularly with regard to Malami’s handling of issues relating to the repatriated Abacha loot during his tenure in office.
Adeyanju stressed that public office is a position of trust and that all current and former public officials must be ready to give a full account of how such trust was exercised while in office.
He further argued that Malami, who served as Attorney-General under the previous administration, wielded significant state power and oversaw prosecutions without restraint, including against opposition figures. According to him, having presided over the prosecution of others, the former minister should not seek exemption from the same legal scrutiny.
Adeyanju maintained that accountability should apply uniformly and urged the EFCC to ensure that no individual is placed above the law.
