WHO Issues Urgent Warning: Hospitals in Gaza Strip on verge of collapse amidst blockade

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a dire warning, stating that the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip is teetering on the brink of collapse. Time is running out, and immediate action is imperative to avert a humanitarian catastrophe as the Gaza Strip remains under a complete blockade.

Hospitals in the region are currently operating under extreme duress, with access to electricity limited to just a few hours each day. The situation has forced healthcare facilities to ration their depleting fuel reserves and heavily rely on generators to sustain the most critical medical functions. If immediate measures are not taken, these generators will cease to function in a matter of days when fuel stocks are exhausted. This impending crisis is poised to have a devastating impact, particularly on the most vulnerable patients, including those in need of life-saving surgeries, individuals in intensive care units, and newborns dependent on incubators for their survival.

The ongoing airstrikes, both from the air, land, and naval forces, continue to exacerbate the situation. The escalating injuries and fatalities are further straining the limited medical resources, exacerbating the crisis and severely limiting the capacity of the already overstretched hospitals to provide care to the sick and injured.

Furthermore, the delivery of essential health services has been severely disrupted, affecting various critical areas such as obstetric care, the management of noncommunicable diseases like cancer and heart conditions, and treatment of common infections. As a result, health facilities are compelled to prioritize life-saving emergency care.

The destruction of critical infrastructure in the region has also significantly impeded the access of emergency medical teams in the field. Shockingly, WHO has documented 34 attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza since the previous Saturday, resulting in the tragic deaths of 11 health workers on duty, injuring 16 others, and causing damage to 19 health facilities and 20 ambulances.

Urgent and immediate entry of humanitarian aid is imperative. These supplies must include essential health services, medical provisions, food, clean water, fuel, and non-food items. Without such crucial assistance, humanitarian and health partners will be unable to respond effectively to the urgent needs of those who desperately require help, putting countless lives at risk with each passing hour.

In light of this perilous situation, WHO has issued a plea for an end to hostilities and a call for the protection of healthcare and civilians against attacks. They are also urgently requesting the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to ensure unimpeded access for health and humanitarian supplies, as well as the deployment of personnel and the evacuation of patients and the injured. WHO emphasizes the critical need for the respect and protection of healthcare facilities.

The organization stands ready to immediately dispatch trauma and essential health supplies through its logistics hub in Dubai, working in collaboration with partners to ensure they swiftly reach the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing. Timely access through the crossing is of paramount importance, enabling WHO and other humanitarian agencies to act swiftly to save lives and mitigate the current crisis.
