INEC defends 2027 election dates, weighs stakeholder concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the legal basis for the dates fixed for the 2027 General Election, following public concerns over their coincidence with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances.

In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 polls were developed in strict compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022.

INEC explained that its Regulations and Guidelines, in place since 2019, prescribe that presidential and National Assembly elections shall hold on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are to take place two weeks later.

“In accordance with these extant legal and regulatory provisions, the Commission fixed Saturday, 20th February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections and Saturday, 6th March 2027 for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections,” the statement said.

However, the Commission acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders over the alignment of the scheduled dates with certain national holidays and observances that could affect voter participation.

INEC assured the public that it remains sensitive to legitimate concerns capable of impacting electoral turnout and the overall conduct of the elections. It disclosed that consultations are ongoing and that, where necessary, it may seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the issues, provided any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to transparency, inclusivity and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, adding that Nigerians would be duly informed of any further developments.
