Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, have rescued an injured herder and arrested suspected cattle rustlers following two separate security incidents in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
In the first incident, which occurred on February 15, 2026, troops responded to reports that two herders were attacked at Amua Village, within the stretch of land between Daudu and Umenger/Ukpiam in Guma LGA. Personnel deployed from Umenger swiftly mobilised to the scene.
On arrival, the troops confirmed that one of the herders had been killed, while the second victim sustained gunshot wounds. The injured herder was evacuated to Keana in neighbouring Nasarawa State for urgent medical attention. The remains of the deceased were handed over to community representatives for burial in accordance with local customs.
In a related development on the same day, troops stationed at Ukpiam acted on intelligence from local youths regarding suspected cattle rustling activities. The operation led to the arrest of a 23-year-old suspect, Terngu Aondohemba, who reportedly confessed to killing two cattle belonging to Fulani herders. He allegedly identified two accomplices, Akpehe and Ashinge, who are currently at large.
Further investigations took troops to Korje Village in Daudu, where Mercy Onban, wife of the alleged buyer of the stolen meat, was apprehended. Recovered meat exhibits were also secured during the operation. Both suspects are in custody pending further investigation.
The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, reaffirmed the task force’s resolve to curb killings and cattle rustling within the joint operations area. He condemned the acts of violence and criminality, warning that perpetrators would be pursued and brought to justice.
Major General Gara also urged community leaders to enhance cooperation with security agencies, stressing that timely intelligence sharing is critical to restoring sustainable peace. He assured law-abiding residents of the task force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the region.
