The United Kingdom will from February 25, 2026, discontinue the issuance of physical visa stickers to Nigerian travellers, introducing mandatory electronic visas (eVisas) as part of a sweeping reform of its immigration system.
Announcing the policy shift in Abuja, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) confirmed that all new Visit visas granted to Nigerian nationals will be issued exclusively in digital format, marking a significant step in the UK’s transition to a fully digital border regime.
Under the new framework, successful applicants will no longer receive a vignette affixed to their passport. Instead, proof of immigration status will be accessible online through a secure UKVI account.
Authorities emphasised that the visa application procedure remains unchanged. Nigerian applicants must still complete the standard online application, attend a Visa Application Centre to enrol biometric data and satisfy existing eligibility criteria. The only change is the format in which the visa is issued.
UKVI clarified that Nigerians currently holding valid visa stickers will not be affected. Such visas will remain valid until their expiration dates and will not require replacement solely due to the transition to digital documentation.
The British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Gill Lever, said the reform is intended to simplify travel procedures while strengthening border security.
According to UKVI, the eVisa system is expected to reduce processing times, as passports will no longer need to be retained for visa endorsement. Travellers will also be able to access and manage their immigration status online at any time.
Officials cited enhanced security as a key benefit, noting that unlike physical stickers, eVisas cannot be lost, stolen or tampered with and allow for real-time verification of immigration status.
Upon visa approval, applicants will be required to create a free UKVI account to view and share their eVisa details when necessary.
The policy signals a broader modernisation of the UK’s border management architecture and places Nigerian travellers among the early adopters of the fully digital visa system.
For frequent travellers, students and business visitors, the transition marks a significant procedural shift, replacing paper-based entry clearance with a secure online immigration record as the new standard for travel to the United Kingdom.
