US commends NAF ahead of AH-1Z helicopter delivery

The United States government has commended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for its high level of preparedness ahead of the delivery of AH-1Z attack helicopters, citing the readiness of designated facilities and support structures for the incoming fleet.

The commendation was conveyed during a three-day high-level engagement at NAF Headquarters in Abuja between a U.S. government delegation from PMA-276, led by Robert Galan, and senior NAF officials. Discussions centred on a comprehensive Programme and Support Plan aimed at ensuring seamless integration, sustainment and operational effectiveness of the aircraft upon arrival.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, was represented at the meeting by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdullahi. He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to aligning operational, technical and logistical frameworks to guarantee immediate mission readiness once the helicopters are delivered.

The engagement marks a further step in advancing defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, underpinned by shared security objectives and institutional collaboration. Officials said the discussions reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen interoperability, capacity building and long-term sustainment planning.

The positive assessment by the U.S. delegation highlights the Nigerian Air Force’s structured modernization programme and its focus on strategic planning to enhance airpower capability. Beyond fleet acquisition, the partnership is expected to reinforce Nigeria’s national security architecture and bolster its capacity to address emerging security challenges.
