The Nigeria Police Force in Edo State has arrested a medical doctor for alleged unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm, as authorities intensify efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons.
Operatives of the Command Intelligence and Rapid Response Squad (CIRRS) apprehended the suspect, identified as Kingsley Dele, 35, during an intelligence-led operation on February 28, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m.
Police said the suspect, a resident of Obaretin Community, was arrested following credible intelligence that led operatives to recover a Beretta pistol allegedly in his possession.
According to the police, the arrest forms part of a broader crackdown on the circulation of illegal firearms across the state.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo, Monday Agbonika, said the command remains committed to tackling the spread of illicit weapons, which he noted often fuels violent crimes in communities.
He stressed that the unlawful possession of firearms—regardless of the status or profession of those involved—poses a serious threat to public safety and will be dealt with decisively.
Police authorities said the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The command also assured residents of its continued vigilance in protecting lives and property, while urging members of the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information.
