The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has called on journalists to uphold truth and professionalism as essential tools for fostering national unity and strengthening security, noting that Nigeria’s stability depends not only on military operations but also on responsible information management.
Speaking through a representative at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, the defence chief reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding the nation amid ongoing security challenges, expressing optimism that Nigeria will prevail.
He said the Easter message of resurrection symbolises hope and renewal, stressing that the country’s current difficulties are temporary.
“Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, yet we remain resilient. Our experience shows that trials are not permanent and renewal is always possible when faith and unity prevail,” he stated.
Oluyede reiterated the military’s resolve to combat terrorism, insurgency and banditry, noting that the sacrifices of troops have contributed significantly to restoring normalcy in affected communities.
He emphasised the strategic role of the media in national security, urging journalists to prioritise accuracy and avoid reports capable of inciting fear or division.
“In today’s information age, security operations are fought not only on the battlefield but also in the information domain. Accurate and responsible reporting strengthens national unity and builds public trust,” he added.
The defence chief also appealed to Nigerians to support security agencies through cooperation and timely information, while paying tribute to fallen soldiers and calling for prayers for personnel in operational theatres.
In his remarks, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, underscored the importance of ethical journalism in nation-building, accountability and democratic governance.
He noted that responsible reporting promotes transparency, combats corruption and strengthens institutions, adding that an informed citizenry is vital to national development.
“A nation is not built only with infrastructure, but with trust, accountability and an informed citizenry. Ethical journalism shines light into dark corners and holds leaders accountable,” he said.
The minister further stated that credible journalism fosters unity, counters misinformation and promotes social cohesion, while amplifying the voices of vulnerable groups.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, urged journalists to draw inspiration from the Easter season by renewing their commitment to truth, integrity and professional excellence.
She acknowledged the pressures faced by media practitioners, including tight deadlines and the risks associated with truth-telling, but encouraged them to remain steadfast.
“Operating in the Federal Capital Territory places a unique responsibility on us. We are at the center of national discourse. Our words carry weight, our reports influence decisions, and our integrity strengthens democracy,” she said.
Ike also emphasised the need for unity within the union, describing it as essential for advancing journalism and safeguarding press freedom.
“As a union, we must continue to stand together. Unity is our strength, and through collective resolve, we can overcome any obstacle,” she added.
The retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security officials and other stakeholders to reflect on faith, responsibility and the media’s role in national development.
