NAPTIP reaffirms commitment to gender protection, women’s empowerment

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Adamu Bello, has reiterated the agency’s commitment to delivering timely and effective responses to gender-related issues, alongside the diligent implementation of policies aimed at reducing the vulnerability of women across Nigeria.

Bello made this known at the UN House in Abuja while addressing participants at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Women O’Clock Post CSW70 Leadership Meeting, organised by the Women Affairs Secretariat (WAS) with support from UN Women.

The meeting followed the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), the United Nations’ largest annual gathering on gender equality and women’s rights, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 9 to 19, 2026.

The NAPTIP Director-General expressed concern over the high number of women and girls affected by human trafficking and gender-based violence, calling for strengthened advocacy and collective action to address these challenges.

She urged women to actively engage in promoting improved gender policy formulation and implementation, particularly in areas directly impacting their welfare. Bello also emphasised the need for increased representation of women in legislative bodies at both federal and sub-national levels.

Commending the Pioneer Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat and FCT Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Bello described the meeting as a timely platform for advancing gender-focused dialogue and collaboration.

She further assured the Secretariat of NAPTIP’s continued support in efforts aimed at promoting gender equality and protecting vulnerable populations.
