Wike: Opposition status must be earned through elections

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that political credibility as an opposition force must be built on electoral success rather than rhetoric or opportunistic coalitions, as he reaffirmed his loyalty to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike made the remarks on Friday during a courtesy visit to the party’s national headquarters, Wadata House, in Abuja, where he pledged support to the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC).

Dismissing claims by smaller political groups positioning themselves as leading opposition forces, Wike insisted that performance at the polls remains the only legitimate measure of political relevance.

“You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election. Those who claim to lead the opposition have not successfully contested any election,” he said.

His comments come against the backdrop of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various parties seeking to consolidate influence.

Reaffirming his commitment to the PDP, Wike said his visit was intended to demonstrate solidarity with the party’s leadership and to encourage unity as it works to recover from internal crises.

“My presence here is to reassure you of my support and to pledge my loyalty to the National Working Committee,” he stated.

He acknowledged that the party had experienced significant internal challenges but expressed optimism that it was gradually stabilising.

“Yes, we have had crises, but we are close to overcoming them. It will require dedication and sacrifice to move the party forward,” he added.

Wike urged the NWC to prioritise reconciliation efforts, particularly by reaching out to former members who had defected but may still be open to re-engagement.

“Engage them. Many are concerned about opportunities, including party tickets. The leadership understands what steps to take,” he advised.

He also cautioned against distractions, including ongoing legal disputes, expressing confidence in the party’s judicial successes.

“We have recorded victories at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. We must remain focused and continue to work collectively,” he said.

In his response, the PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, assured that the new leadership was committed to repositioning the party and restoring public confidence.

“We have the capacity and determination to take the party to greater heights. We will not disappoint Nigerians,” he said.

Similarly, the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, commended Wike’s continued support, describing his visit as a morale booster for the party’s leadership.

The meeting highlights ongoing efforts within the PDP to strengthen internal cohesion and reassert its standing as a major opposition force amid evolving political dynamics in Nigeria.
