The Defence Headquarters has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel accused of breaching national security, including allegations of mutiny aimed at overthrowing the government.
The development, announced on April 24, 2026, follows an earlier statement issued on January 26, 2026, in which the military high command disclosed ongoing investigations into the matter.
According to the DHQ, the constitution of the court martial underscores its commitment to reinforcing discipline, accountability, and the protection of national integrity and constituted authority. The proceedings, it stated, will be conducted in strict compliance with established legal procedures within the military justice system.
The military assured that the trial would adhere to the highest standards of fairness and impartiality, with due process observed at every stage to guarantee justice without bias.
In a statement signed by Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ reiterated its resolve to uphold professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law, while safeguarding the rights of the accused and ensuring fair hearing throughout the judicial process.
