China hands over ECOWAS HQ, urges regional unity

The China on Tuesday formally handed over a newly constructed headquarters complex to the Economic Community of West African States in Abuja, with regional leaders using the occasion to call for deeper integration and stronger unity across West Africa.

The ceremony drew senior government officials, diplomats, and regional stakeholders, with speakers describing the project as both a major infrastructure milestone and a symbol of strategic partnership and collective ambition for the sub-region.

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, described the handover as a historic moment coinciding with the bloc’s 50th anniversary.

He clarified that the event marked the completion and transfer of the building, while its formal inauguration is scheduled for later in the year. The commissioning is expected to be led by Julius Maada Bio, in his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, alongside Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other regional leaders.

Touray recalled that construction of the complex began in October 2023 with Chinese funding estimated at $56.57 million, commending the speed and quality of delivery.

“Considering the scale and complexity of the project, its completion within two years is highly commendable,” he said, expressing appreciation to Chinese authorities for their support.

He also acknowledged China’s broader contributions to ECOWAS, including assistance to regional peace and security initiatives such as the Standby Force, and thanked Nigerian authorities, particularly the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for facilitating the project.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, described the headquarters as a flagship symbol of China-Africa cooperation, noting that it reflects a blend of Chinese engineering expertise and West African cultural identity.

He said the structure—popularly referred to as the “Eye of West Africa”—was completed after more than 1,200 days of construction and would strengthen ECOWAS’ operational capacity while serving as a platform for regional development.

Yu also situated the project within broader diplomatic relations, referencing decades of China-Africa cooperation and ongoing initiatives aimed at supporting African development through trade, infrastructure, and technical partnerships.

For Nigeria, the host nation, the project carries significant symbolic importance.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike, described the handover as “the transfer of a vision,” emphasizing that the building represents regional solidarity and the commitment to building strong institutions.

He noted that Abuja continues to serve as Nigeria’s diplomatic hub and a focal point for international engagement.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, also described the event as a reaffirmation of unity and a renewed commitment to peace and sustainable development in the region.

She highlighted ECOWAS’ role since its establishment in 1975 in advancing economic integration, conflict prevention, and governance, adding that the new headquarters would enhance institutional efficiency and coordination.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu further praised President Tinubu’s leadership in promoting regional cooperation and commended China’s support as a reflection of mutual respect and South-South collaboration.

She urged member states to remain united in addressing emerging challenges, stressing that regional cohesion is essential to achieving long-term stability and development.

Across remarks at the event, leaders agreed that while the headquarters represents a significant infrastructural achievement, its true impact will depend on sustained political will and collective action among West African nations.

They emphasized that the facility should serve not merely as an administrative centre, but as a platform for advancing the next phase of regional integration anchored on cooperation, shared responsibility, and unity.
