Navy raids Dayspring island, dismantles militant base in Cross River

The Nigerian Navy has intensified operations against criminal networks in the maritime domain, launching a coordinated offensive that dislodged suspected militants and dismantled a major hideout along the Calabar–Oron channel in Cross River State.

Naval authorities said personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship Victory and Forward Operating Base Ibaka conducted clearance operations on Dayspring Island following a surge in kidnappings and related crimes in the area. The mission included the establishment of a forward security outpost at Idung 1 (Peacock Crossing), aimed at strengthening control over surrounding creeks and waterways.

According to a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, the advancing troops forced suspected militants to abandon their positions and flee, as sustained pressure was maintained in collaboration with troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade.

Subsequent exploitation of the area led to the discovery and destruction of a militant hideout linked to a suspected kingpin identified as “Juju” in the Idung axis. The suspect reportedly escaped, leaving behind two boats fitted with outboard engines, which were seized by security forces. The facility was later demolished to prevent further use.

Security operatives also apprehended a suspected informant believed to have been providing logistical support to the militant network. The individual is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, with plans for prosecution in accordance with the law.

To consolidate operational gains, authorities have imposed a 13-hour restriction on maritime movement within the affected area, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., as part of efforts to curb criminal activity.

The Navy said the offensive has significantly disrupted the operations of militant groups that previously carried out kidnappings and extortion in riverine communities, limiting their movement and weakening their logistical networks.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Nigerian Navy stated it would sustain the ongoing operations to ensure the waterways remain secure for legitimate economic activities and to eliminate criminal elements operating in the region.
