The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has vowed to bring to justice the perpetrators of an attack on two of its personnel in Niger State, which claimed the life of one officer and left another seriously injured.
The Service disclosed that the incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, when two officers attached to its Wawa Control Post were attacked by unidentified armed men while conducting routine surveillance patrol in the Tunga Taya Woro axis of Niger State.
The deceased officer, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration (ASI) I.U. Babangida, died in the attack, while his colleague, Inspector A.K. Musa, sustained serious injuries but managed to escape. Musa is currently receiving medical attention.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the NIS condemned the attack, describing it as a tragic incident that underscored the risks faced by personnel carrying out their duties to protect the nation’s borders.
The Service confirmed that Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, paying tribute to his dedication, sacrifice and commitment to duty.
It also extended its condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.
The NIS assured both families of its continued support and assistance during the difficult period, stressing that it would not abandon its personnel and their dependants in the aftermath of the incident.
On efforts to apprehend the attackers, the Service said it was collaborating with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify those responsible and ensure they face the full weight of the law.
The Immigration Service further declared that the attack would not deter it from discharging its statutory responsibilities, reaffirming its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.
The statement was electronically signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration (DCI) Akinsola Akinlabi, at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja on October 15, 2026.
