Again, Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH discovers illegal refining site in Bayelsa

In a significant operation dubbed “Operation DELTA SANITY,” the Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH has made a notable discovery and successfully deactivated an active illegal refining site in Eduwuini 11, Bayelsa State. The operation, which took place on Friday, February 11, 2024, revealed a clandestine operation involving the illicit processing of crude oil.

The raid led by the Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH uncovered the presence of two reservoirs, three drums, and empty sacks indicative of an illegal refining setup. Additionally, authorities found two ovens containing crude oil estimated to be around 4000 liters. Alongside these facilities, a small boat was discovered loaded with illegally refined products suspected to be kerosene.

The discovery underscores the persistent challenges posed by illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region, where such operations continue to thrive despite concerted efforts to combat them. The Nigerian Navy’s swift action in dismantling this operation serves as a testament to their commitment to curbing illegal activities detrimental to both the environment and national security.

Illegal refining not only poses significant environmental hazards but also contributes to economic losses for the country. The production of illicit petroleum products undermines the government’s efforts to regulate and control the oil sector, thereby impacting revenue generation and national development.

Authorities have initiated investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the illegal refining site uncovered in Bayelsa State. This operation highlights the necessity for continued vigilance and collaborative efforts among law enforcement agencies to combat illicit activities and safeguard Nigeria’s resources and interests.
