ActionAid Nigeria criticizes cabinet reshuffle, calls for more female ministers

ActionAid Nigeria has expressed disappointment over the lack of increased female representation in President Bola Tinubu’s recent cabinet reshuffle. In a statement on Thursday, the organization’s Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, acknowledged the restructuring efforts but highlighted the missed opportunity to advance gender equality.

Mamedu criticized the removal of three female ministers and the appointment of seven new ministers, only three of whom are women, emphasizing that this move undermines the country’s progress toward the 35% Affirmative Action benchmark for female representation in government.

“This reshuffle raises serious concerns about the government’s commitment to gender inclusion, especially in a country where women’s representation in both elected and appointed positions remains alarmingly low,” Mamedu stated.

While the decision to replace underperforming ministers was seen as a step toward accountability, Mamedu questioned why these officials failed in the first place and urged the government to prevent a recurrence of past mistakes.

Additionally, he raised concerns over the increasing size of the cabinet, calling attention to the rising cost of governance and the need for efficient service delivery. Mamedu urged newly appointed ministers to stay focused on their mandates, particularly in addressing issues like poverty reduction and social protection.

ActionAid Nigeria concluded by reaffirming its commitment to holding the government accountable and advocating for policies that prioritize equity, transparency, and the well-being of all Nigerians.
