ActionAid Nigeria has called for concerted efforts to mitigate the harsh effects of climate change on women and children, particularly in rural communities across the country. The appeal was made on Tuesday in Abuja during the Women Climate Champion Award event.
The humanitarian organization stressed the urgency of addressing the heightened vulnerabilities women face due to climate change, especially in conflict-affected areas. ActionAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, emphasized that climate change has exacerbated gender inequalities, with women bearing the brunt of its impact.
“Climate change compounds the vulnerabilities faced by women in conflict-affected areas, making their roles and contributions even more critical,” Mamedu said. He highlighted that ActionAid is not only working to alleviate the struggles of women and children but also honoring individuals and groups making significant contributions to climate action and gender equality through the Women Climate Champion Award.
“This award is a celebration of the remarkable contributions made by women, individuals, and organizations in climate action. It aims to recognize those who have made substantial strides in addressing climate-related challenges and advocating for gender equality,” Mamedu added.
Blessing Aganbi, a representative from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), echoed the call for collective action. She urged stakeholders to commit to long-term solutions, noting that climate change is a global issue that requires sustained efforts.
“Climate change is affecting people worldwide, and it won’t end soon. We must all work together to alleviate its effects,” Aganbi stated.
The event underscored the need for inclusive, gender-responsive climate solutions to build resilience in vulnerable communities.
