Nigeria seeks collaboration with China to combat misinformation and disinformation

The Nigerian government has called for stronger collaboration with China to tackle the rising threats of misinformation and disinformation, leveraging modern communication channels in both nations.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, made this appeal in Abuja on Tuesday during an event organized by the China Media Group (CMG) to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China. The event, themed “Written in the Sky: My China Story,” highlighted the growing need for international cooperation in addressing media challenges.

Represented by Suleiman Haruna, Director of Public Relations and Protocol at the Ministry of Information, Idris praised CMG’s efforts in fostering cultural and linguistic exchanges between Nigeria and China, noting the media’s crucial role in shaping societal values and promoting mutual understanding.

“The role of media outlets in guiding society is both vital and far-reaching. They promote progress and contribute to societal, economic, and cultural development,” Idris said. He also emphasized the importance of balanced reporting and the creation of content that inspires hope and progress.

Idris pointed out that while advancements in technology offer immense opportunities for timely and credible news dissemination, they also present challenges, particularly the spread of misinformation and disinformation. He called for joint efforts between Nigeria and China to confront and ideally eliminate these threats.

The Minister highlighted the longstanding relationship between both nations, referencing agreements signed during the recent Forum of China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to enhance media exchange and collaboration.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, also spoke at the event, expressing his affection for Nigeria after just a few weeks in the country. He praised the growing relationship between China and Nigeria and underscored the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to China, which saw the signing of several bilateral agreements.

“The relationship between China and Africa will continue to grow from strength to strength, and we will play a great role in improving the livelihood of both regions,” Yu Dunhai remarked.

The event underscored the deepening ties between Nigeria and China, with both countries committed to addressing global challenges such as misinformation while promoting cultural and media exchanges.
