Former Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director with the Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
Adeda reportedly went to work at the ministry in Asaba but did not return home. His death on Friday, September 25, 2026, followed an incident at the Ministry the previous day, prompting the police to commence a homicide investigation.
In a statement, Omo-Agege said the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death were deeply disturbing, particularly because the incident allegedly occurred within a government office.
The former senator said three individuals — Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh — had been named in connection with allegations that Adeda was assaulted.
He stressed, however, that the investigation must establish the precise circumstances and cause of death before any definitive conclusion is reached.
“If it turns out he was beaten to death, this isn’t just a tragedy — it’s murder,” Omo-Agege said, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable under the law.
He commended the police for confirming the incident and commencing a homicide investigation, while urging the authorities to ensure that the process remains thorough, expeditious and free from external interference.
Omo-Agege disclosed that Lucky Adoh was already in custody and called on the police to locate Attah and Okestine, as well as identify and prosecute anyone else found to have been involved.
He also called on Commissioner Kingsley Ashibogwu to step aside while investigations continue, arguing that the alleged incident occurred in his office and that temporarily stepping aside would help preserve public confidence in the investigation.
According to him, such a step should not be construed as an admission of wrongdoing but as a measure to protect the integrity and credibility of the investigative process.
The former Senate deputy president further demanded the publication of the findings of the Administrative Panel alongside the outcome of the police investigation.
“We can’t let this be swept under the rug once the media attention fades,” he said.
Omo-Agege expressed solidarity with the Adeda family, saying the circumstances surrounding the death must be fully established and that justice should be pursued to its conclusion.
