Ademola Lookman wins CAF player of the year, Nnadozie named best goalkeeper again

Nigerian international Ademola Lookman has been named the CAF African Player of the Year 2024, while Chiamaka Nnadozie claimed the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year title for the second consecutive year.

The awards were announced during the CAF Awards ceremony on Monday, streamed live on the organization’s YouTube channel.

Lookman, who plays for Atalanta in Italy’s Serie A, emerged as the best male footballer on the continent, surpassing other top nominees, including Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/PSG), Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast/Brighton), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea/Borussia Dortmund), and Ronwen Williams (South Africa/Mamelodi Sundowns).

This recognition comes after Lookman’s stellar performances in 2024, which also earned him a 14th-place ranking in the Ballon d’Or standings announced in October. The 27-year-old forward’s impressive contributions for both club and country solidified his status as one of Africa’s brightest stars.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, secured the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, further cementing her reputation as a top talent in African football.

Additionally, the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national team, were honored as the Women’s Football Team of the Year following their strong performances on the international stage.

This year’s CAF Awards marked a turning point as last year’s winner, Victor Osimhen, and 2022 champion, Mohamed Salah, were not on the final shortlist, paving the way for a new champion in Lookman.

The awards celebrated the outstanding achievements of African players, reaffirming Nigeria’s dominance in the sport with multiple accolades.
