Amnesty International has announced plans to collaborate with the Benue State Government to review and update relevant laws in order to align them with international human rights standards.
The initiative was disclosed following a meeting in Abuja between the organisation and the Benue State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Ornguga Yangien.
According to Amnesty International, the Benue State Ministry of Justice also expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with the organisation in the areas of justice delivery and reparations for victims and survivors of years of violent attacks on rural communities across the state.
The organisation noted that it has documented several incidents of alleged atrocities affecting communities in Benue State and reiterated its commitment to supporting accountability and human rights protection mechanisms.
Speaking during the engagement, the Commissioner for Justice emphasised the need for collaboration in aligning domestic laws with international human rights standards. He also called for joint efforts in public sensitisation on citizens’ rights, as well as capacity building for judicial officers and law enforcement agencies.
Amnesty International described the judiciary as a critical partner in the promotion and protection of human rights, expressing optimism that the collaboration would strengthen justice delivery in the state.
The organisation said it looks forward to sustained engagement with Benue State’s justice sector to promote accountability, improve legal frameworks, and enhance protection for vulnerable communities.
