The Minister of Power, Adebayo Joseph Tegbe, has commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for recent infrastructure milestones and coordinated interventions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electricity supply and improving service delivery.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the minister praised TCN for the successful energisation of a 300MVA transformer at the Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja, describing the project as a significant enhancement of transmission capacity within the Federal Capital Territory.
He also lauded the rapid joint response by TCN and AEDC to the unexpected failure of a 100MVA transformer that disrupted electricity supply to parts of Abuja last Friday. According to him, both organisations deployed technical teams promptly, restoring power to affected areas within 24 hours.
Tegbe described the swift restoration as evidence of improved inter-agency coordination within the power sector and a demonstration of the ministry’s commitment to efficient, citizen-centred service delivery.
“The rapid restoration effort underscores the professionalism and dedication of personnel across the power sector,” the minister stated, adding that such responsiveness was critical to sustaining public confidence in ongoing reforms.
The minister further commended NDPHC for the successful restoration of the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State, which had been dormant for approximately three years. The plant, developed under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP), is expected to contribute about 375 megawatts to the national grid.
He described the development as a major milestone for power generation, noting that it would strengthen grid stability and improve electricity supply in the South-East region.
Tegbe also commended the leadership of NDPHC Managing Director, Jennifer Adighije, for overseeing the restoration of the facility.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing structural and operational challenges in the electricity sector, the minister said sustained performance across agencies would continue to receive recognition and institutional support.
He urged stakeholders across the electricity value chain to deepen efforts in innovation, operational efficiency, and infrastructure development, stressing that reliable power supply remains central to economic growth, industrial productivity, and improved living standards.
The commendation comes amid ongoing sector reforms aimed at expanding generation capacity, strengthening transmission networks, and improving distribution performance nationwide.
