Renowned professor of International Law and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Abuja, Aisha Sani Maikudi, has been appointed as the acting vice-chancellor by the University Senate.
The appointment was announced at the valedictory Senate meeting held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the University’s Main Campus. According to the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, Maikudi’s appointment is in a “temporary capacity effective after the tenure of the current vice-chancellor, pending ratification by the Governing Council.”
Professor Na’Allah, whose five-year tenure concludes on June 30, 2024, commended Maikudi for her leadership qualities and contributions to the University.
In her acceptance speech, Maikudi expressed gratitude to the Senate members for their confidence in her, stating, “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and unwavering commitment that you have accorded me.”
Profile of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi: Born on January 31, 1983, Aisha Sani Maikudi is the youngest female professor of Law in Northwestern Nigeria and the University of Abuja. She attended Queens College, Lagos, where she obtained her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). She pursued higher education at the University of Reading, earning an LLB in 2004, followed by an LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005, and a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja in 2015.
Maikudi joined the University of Abuja as a Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, and rose to the rank of professor in 2022. She became the first female Deputy Dean of the University’s Faculty of Law in 2018 and the pioneer director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.
An active participant in numerous national and international conferences in countries including the UK, US, South Africa, Germany, Italy, and Egypt, Maikudi has conducted extensive research on United Nations Law and published widely in the field. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), and International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
