Alleged ₦1.38bn Fraud: Court adjourns Jude Okoye’s trial to April 14

Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, has adjourned the trial of Jude Okoye Chigozie, former manager of the music duo P-Square, to April 14, 2025.

Okoye, who is facing a seven-count charge of money laundering, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside his company, Northside Music Limited.

Charges Against Okoye

According to the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate, Okoye allegedly laundered illicit funds through real estate transactions. One of the charges states that in 2022, he acquired a property at No. 5 Tony Eromosele Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos, valued at ₦850 million, knowing that the funds were proceeds of an unlawful act.

Okoye pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment on February 26, 2025.

Bail Granted Despite EFCC’s Objection

At the hearing on March 3, 2025, Okoye’s counsel, Inibehe Effiong, moved a bail application, citing medical reasons. The EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Fanen Anum, opposed the request, arguing that Okoye was a flight risk and could interfere with witnesses.

After reviewing the arguments, Justice Owoeye ruled that the charges were bailable and granted Okoye bail in the sum of ₦100 million, with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction. Additionally, Okoye was ordered to notify the EFCC before any travel outside the jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to April 14, 2025, for further proceedings.
