Alleged Money Laundering: Witness reveals N35bn in Mompha’s accounts

In the trial of Ismaila Mustapha, also known as Mompha, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigator Idi Musa testified on Monday, revealing the discovery of N35bn in two bank accounts linked to the defendant. Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos heard that the funds were uncovered during an investigation triggered by intelligence from the FBI.

Mompha, arraigned alongside his company Ismalob Global Investment Limited on January 12, 2022, faces eight counts of conspiracy to launder funds, retention of proceeds of criminal conduct, and other related charges. He pleaded not guilty.

The court learned from Musa that intelligence received in 2019 indicated Mompha and his company were involved in cybercrime in the United States. Further investigation revealed significant financial transactions: N30bn in one bank account and N5bn in another, contradicting Mompha’s claim of being in the Bureau De Change business.

Efforts to arrest Mompha included collaboration with Nigeria Immigration Services, leading to his apprehension at the airport in October 2019. Musa’s testimony included details from the FBI’s forensic analysis, which found that Mompha’s iPhone was used for suspicious financial activities.

The court admitted Mompha’s statement and Asset Declaration Form as evidence. The trial continues on October 8, 2024.
