Amnesty: Boko Haram guilty of ongoing war crimes

Amnesty International has condemned the recent wave of brutal attacks by Boko Haram, accusing the insurgent group of committing war crimes and gross violations of international humanitarian law.

In a strongly worded statement, the human rights organization denounced Boko Haram’s ongoing campaign of violence, which includes the razing of villages, execution of civilians, and widespread use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), particularly along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road. Dozens of civilians have reportedly been killed in these attacks since early March.

“Boko Haram’s actions show utter disregard for human life and international law. These atrocities—including killings, abductions, and looting—must not go unpunished,” Amnesty International stated, calling for accountability and justice for victims.

The group emphasized that Boko Haram continues to abduct women and girls, displace communities, and loot property across northeastern Nigeria. The organization criticized the Nigerian government’s response, stressing the urgent need for better civilian protection in conflict zones and reparation for affected families.

Since 2020, Boko Haram has increased attacks on farmers and fishermen around the Lake Chad region, compounding the long-running humanitarian crisis. The conflict, which began in 2011, has displaced over 2 million people, according to the United Nations.

Amnesty International urged the Nigerian authorities to take stronger action to safeguard civilians, end impunity, and uphold international human rights obligations.
