Amnesty condemns demolition of Alaba Rago market in Lagos

Amnesty International has condemned the demolition of homes and businesses at Alaba Rago Market in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, describing it as unlawful and a violation of human rights.

The rights group said the demolition, which affected hundreds of shops and shelters, was carried out without proper consultation and in disregard of the six-month notice earlier issued to traders. According to Amnesty, executing the demolition just one month into the notice period amounted to “deliberate contempt for the rule of law and due process.”

The exercise has left hundreds of families homeless and destroyed the livelihoods of thousands who have traded in the area for decades. Witnesses reported that traders who attempted to salvage their goods were tear-gassed, while many sustained injuries in the chaotic operation.

Amnesty International stressed that international law prohibits forced evictions and the deliberate destruction of property, calling the treatment of Alaba Rago residents “inhuman and degrading.” The group demanded accountability, urging authorities to bring perpetrators to justice.

It also called on the Lagos State Government to establish a commission of inquiry into the incident and provide adequate housing and compensation for victims who lost their homes and means of livelihood.
