Amnesty International condemns fresh Sokoto attacks

Amnesty International has condemned the failure of Nigerian authorities to protect lives and property following renewed attacks by gunmen on several communities in Isa and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas of Sokoto State.

The human rights organisation said the attacks, which escalated between yesterday and today, have led to the displacement of residents, abductions and growing fears over the whereabouts of many villagers who remain unaccounted for.

In a statement, Amnesty International expressed concern over the worsening security situation in parts of northern Nigeria, accusing authorities of failing in their constitutional responsibility to safeguard citizens.

“The government has an obligation to protect its population. The rising death toll, abductions and displacement in northern Nigeria show just how badly the authorities are failing in this responsibility,” the organisation stated.

Residents of the affected communities were reportedly forced to flee their homes as armed attackers invaded villages, leaving many families separated and communities deserted.

Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government and security agencies to take urgent measures to halt the violence, rescue abducted victims and ensure the safety of affected populations.

The organisation also urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the attacks and bring those responsible to justice.
