Amnesty International has condemned the killing of renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, by gunmen in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State, calling on Nigerian authorities to ensure a prompt and effective investigation.
The cleric was reportedly killed on Tuesday by armed men riding motorcycles as he left his residence for his usual evening preaching.
In a statement, Amnesty International described the killing as a grave incident and urged the authorities to identify, apprehend and prosecute those suspected of being responsible.
The human rights organisation said Masussuka had consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among Muslim faithful.
He was also known for speaking against violent extremism and radicalisation, positions that underscored his advocacy for peaceful religious engagement.
Amnesty International further disclosed that the late cleric had faced threats to his life and intimidation throughout his life, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding his killing.
The organisation stressed that the Nigerian authorities must ensure that the incident is thoroughly investigated and that those responsible are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
It also called for effective measures to protect religious leaders and other individuals facing threats because of their advocacy for peace and peaceful coexistence.
The killing adds to security concerns in Katsina State and the wider North-West region, where armed attacks have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.
Amnesty International maintained that accountability for the killing would be essential to upholding the rule of law and protecting the right to life.
