Amnesty International has raised serious concerns over the recent abduction of more than 160 people by gunmen in Kuchi village, located in Munya local government area of Niger State. The invasion, marked by violence and terror, underscores the Nigerian authorities’ persistent failure to safeguard citizens’ lives.
During the raid, which lasted several hours, seven individuals were killed. The assailants went house to house, subjecting families to brutal and degrading treatment. Amnesty International highlighted the dire situation in rural communities of Niger State, where residents are frequently at the mercy of gunmen who engage in daily killings and abductions.
Kuchi village has faced continuous attacks since 2021, with women and girls being raped in their homes and exorbitant ransoms demanded from villagers to prevent kidnappings.
Amnesty International is urging Nigerian authorities to take decisive action to end these abductions and ensure justice for the victims. The organization asserts that the repeated mass abductions and killings starkly reveal the authorities’ failure to protect their people.
