Amnesty International condemns police killing of 18-year-old in Ekpoma

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing of 18-year-old Chinedu Abimbor by a police patrol team in Ekpoma, Edo State, on Thursday. The human rights organization described the incident as yet another example of the Nigerian police’s pattern of brutality and disregard for human rights.

According to eyewitnesses, Chinedu was shot dead by officers from a police patrol team in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, but the incident has sparked outrage within the community and renewed calls for police reform.

In a statement issued on Friday, Amnesty International denounced the killing as part of a disturbing trend of police violence targeting young people in Nigeria. “This incident is yet another example of the Nigeria Police’s callous disregard for human life and the rule of law,” the statement read. “For decades, Nigerian youth have been subjected to harassment, intimidation, and extrajudicial killings by security forces who continue to operate with complete impunity.”

Amnesty International highlighted that despite numerous pledges from Nigerian authorities to reform the police and improve accountability, incidents of police misconduct remain widespread. The organization criticized the government’s failure to address systemic issues within the police force, noting that the culture of impunity and corruption has created a climate of fear and mistrust among citizens.

“It is unacceptable that despite repeated promises of reform, Nigerian police officers continue to operate outside the boundaries of the law,” Amnesty International stated. “The Nigerian authorities must immediately launch a thorough and impartial investigation into this incident, ensure that those responsible are held accountable, and take concrete steps to prevent further abuses.”

Local residents and civil society groups have also condemned the killing, demanding justice for Chinedu and broader reforms within the Nigerian police force. Protests have been reported in Ekpoma and neighboring communities, with demonstrators calling for greater transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

Amnesty International reiterated its call for the Nigerian government to prioritize police reform and uphold the fundamental rights of all citizens. “Justice for Chinedu Abimbor is not just about holding those responsible accountable—it’s about ending the culture of impunity and ensuring that every Nigerian feels safe and protected by the police, not threatened by them,” the statement concluded.
