CHRICED condemns Senate over Natasha’s suspension, accuses Akpabio of impunity

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has strongly condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling it a blatant act of impunity and gender-based discrimination by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, CHRICED criticized Akpabio’s alleged pattern of disrespect toward female senators and accused him of creating a hostile environment for women in the Senate. The organization described the suspension of Senator Natasha as politically motivated and linked it to her previous allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio.

“The suspension of Senator Natasha represents yet another instance of the ongoing violation of the rights of women senators to express themselves,” the statement read. “Senator Akpabio’s conduct is not only harmful to the advancement of women in politics but also sets a dangerous precedent for the treatment of women in society.”

Pattern of Disrespect and Harassment

CHRICED highlighted a series of incidents underscoring Akpabio’s alleged disregard for female senators. It pointed to his past dismissal of Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). When Senator Ireti raised concerns about being excluded from key discussions, particularly those regarding the FCT budget, Akpabio allegedly instructed the FCT Minister to “ignore distractions.”

Furthermore, Akpabio was accused of making disparaging remarks about Senator Natasha on the Senate floor, likening her behavior to that seen in a nightclub. Although he later apologized following public outrage, CHRICED claimed the apology lacked sincerity, as Akpabio has continued to exhibit disrespectful and unprofessional conduct.

Sexual Harassment Allegation and Political Retaliation

The organization linked Natasha’s suspension to her previous allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio, describing it as a calculated act of retaliation. “Senator Akpabio’s decision to preside over Natasha’s suspension is a travesty of justice. One cannot impartially judge a case in which they are personally involved,” CHRICED stated.

CHRICED rejected the justification for Natasha’s suspension and demanded her immediate and unconditional reinstatement. “The timing of this action, shortly after the nightclub remarks, suggests a premeditated agenda against Senator Natasha,” the statement added.

Broader Implications for Women in Politics

The organization warned that the Senate’s treatment of Senator Natasha reflects deeper systemic issues facing women in Nigerian politics. Women occupy only four out of 109 seats in the 10th National Assembly, despite the 35% affirmative action policy aimed at increasing female representation in governance.

“Even the few women who secure political office face harassment, silencing, and marginalization,” CHRICED noted. “Senator Natasha’s suspension and the silence of her fellow senators only deepen the challenges of achieving gender equality and may discourage other women from participating in governance.”

CHRICED also referenced past allegations against Akpabio, including accusations of sexual harassment by Ms. Gberu Joy Nunieh, the former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), during his tenure as Federal Minister of Niger Delta.

Calls for Accountability and Reform

CHRICED called on the Senate to impose disciplinary measures against Akpabio and establish protocols to prevent future misconduct. The organization demanded a public apology to Senator Natasha and all female senators and stressed the importance of creating a respectful and inclusive environment in the Senate.

“Leaders in influential positions must set a positive example and treat their colleagues with dignity, regardless of gender,” the statement concluded. “CHRICED stands in solidarity with all women facing discrimination and will continue to advocate for gender equality and accountability in governance.
