Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to release Sunday Ifedi and his wife, Calista Ifedi, who have been held incommunicado since their abduction by security agents from their Enugu home on November 23, 2021.
The couple faces allegations of affiliation with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a claim Amnesty argues does not justify their detention without access to family or legal representation.
The organization condemned the detention as a blatant violation of Nigeria’s human rights obligations under national, regional, and international frameworks.
It also highlighted the devastating impact on the couple’s children, who have been unable to attend school or maintain contact with their parents since the arrest.
Since 2016, Amnesty International has documented numerous cases of unlawful detentions and enforced disappearances in Nigeria’s southeast region. It describes these practices as a direct assault on the rule of law, urging the government to ensure compliance with international human rights standards.
