Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian government to take immediate action to stop the escalating violence in Plateau State, where recent attacks have left over 40 people dead and hundreds displaced in Bokkos Local Government Area.
The latest wave of violence comes just days after gunmen killed 10 mourners, adding to a rising death toll. Communities in Ruwi, Mangor, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai have suffered repeated attacks, with residents living in constant fear. Apart from the loss of lives, entire villages have been set ablaze, homes and farmlands destroyed, and survivors left without shelter.
According to Amnesty International, the crisis in Plateau State has worsened significantly, with 1,336 people killed between December 2023 and February 2024. The worst-hit areas include Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas.
The human rights organization has raised concerns over the failure of security forces to prevent the attacks or respond swiftly to distress calls. Many residents have accused authorities of abandoning them, stating that security personnel often arrive hours after the violence has occurred. Additionally, the lack of arrests or prosecutions has further eroded trust in the government’s ability to protect citizens.
Amnesty International is urging the Nigerian government to conduct independent investigations into the killings and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The organization warns that the continued failure to address the crisis is leaving rural communities vulnerable to further bloodshed.
