Amnesty International urges probe into deadly attack on Ebonyi community

Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian authorities to launch a thorough investigation into a recent attack by gunmen on the Oriuzor community in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The attack, which occurred on November 1, left two people dead, displaced dozens of residents, and resulted in the burning of several homes and vehicles.

In a statement on Monday, Amnesty International described the incident as another tragic reminder of the growing insecurity faced by rural communities across the country, where people live in constant fear of violence.

“The 1 November attack is yet another indication of how rural communities across Nigeria perpetually live in fear of attacks,” the organisation said.

It warned that such repeated assaults have caused widespread displacement and worsened food insecurity in affected regions. Many residents, Amnesty noted, rely on farming for survival but are now too terrified to return to their fields.

The human rights organisation urged the government to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice and take concrete measures to protect lives and property in vulnerable communities.
