The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that one of its officers participated in electoral activities in Anambra State, clarifying that its personnel intervened solely to rescue officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members held hostage by suspected political thugs.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 82 Division, the Army described the viral video as misleading and taken out of context.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at about 8:20 p.m. on November 8, 2025, at Ukwu Oji Umubele, Awka Ward 5, in Awka South Local Government Area. The Army said an officer of the 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support) received a distress call from NYSC officials reporting that corps members and INEC staff were being held hostage following the disappearance of the polling unit’s Collation Officer.
“In line with the Nigerian Army’s constitutional responsibility to aid civil authorities and protect citizens, a rapid response team consisting of two officers and twelve soldiers was deployed to the scene,” the statement read.
Upon arrival, the troops reportedly encountered a tense situation involving several political figures, including the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, who questioned the presence of military personnel at the location.
Despite the charged atmosphere, the Army said its troops maintained professionalism and restraint, focusing solely on rescuing the trapped officials. “The rescued personnel were subsequently escorted safely to the INEC office, where collation continued peacefully,” the statement added.
The 82 Division emphasized that the Army’s intervention was a humanitarian and security operation, not an act of political interference. It described the viral video as “baseless, misleading, and regrettable,” urging the public to disregard false narratives.
The Division also noted the conduct of certain political actors during the incident and said it would engage with the Anambra State Government to ensure better coordination and understanding in future joint operations.
Reaffirming its neutrality, professionalism, and commitment to protecting democratic institutions, the Nigerian Army reiterated its pledge to safeguard lives, maintain peace, and support the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
