Atiku mourns victims of Adamawa attack, faults government on insecurity

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has condemned Tuesday’s attack on Wagga Mongono community in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, where suspected insurgents killed at least four people, injured several others, and set homes, shops, and a church ablaze.

In a statement on Wednesday, Atiku, who holds the traditional title of Waziri Adamawa, described the incident as a painful reminder of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

“Our people are tired of government’s empty claims of improvements in security,” he said. “Nigerians would love to see this government exert pressure on insecurity much as they do on revenue generation. We cannot continue to lose our productive population to sundry criminalities and yet make bogus claims about reaching revenue targets, as though the lives of the workforce that produces the revenue don’t matter.”

Atiku stressed that many Nigerians remain vulnerable to violent attacks, noting that the Wagga Mongono tragedy shows the security situation is far from being under control.

“As someone from Adamawa, this incident feels deeply personal. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones, to those who were injured, and to the entire community forced to seek refuge in the bushes for safety,” he said.

The former vice-president urged the government to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive, sustained measures to secure lives and property.

“Nigerians deserve more than promises; they deserve peace, security, and the freedom to live in any place of their choice without fear,” he added, while praying for the repose of the dead, healing for the injured, and comfort for the bereaved families.
