Barau applauds Tinubu’s swift action in foiling Benin coup

Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly approving Nigeria’s military intervention that helped foil a coup attempt in the Republic of Benin.

The intervention followed a broadcast on Benin’s state television in which soldiers under the banner of the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR) announced the ousting of President Patrice Talon. The prompt deployment and strategic actions of the Nigerian Armed Forces were pivotal in restoring order and stabilising the neighbouring country.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau commended President Tinubu for responding decisively to Benin’s request for assistance.

He described democracy as the only acceptable system of governance for West Africa, insisting that military rule has no place in today’s world.
“I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly acceding to the request of the Government of the Benin Republic for Nigerian military intervention to foil the coup,” Barau said. “Military rule has no place in our society. Regardless of the situation, democracy remains the best option for our subregion and continent.”

The Deputy Senate President reaffirmed ECOWAS Parliament’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, regional integration and parliamentary cooperation across West Africa.

“At the ECOWAS Parliament, our commitment to building a more integrated, stable and prosperous West Africa is rock solid,” he said. “We are collectively working to promote parliamentary diplomacy, unity among member states and enhance peace and security for the development of our region.”
