IGP opens 2025 PPROs conference, calls for stronger fight against misinformation

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Monday declared open the 2025 Annual Conference of Police Public Relations Officers (PPROs) at the Police Resource Centre in Abuja, calling for strengthened strategic communication and a coordinated response to misinformation.

According to a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in his keynote address, Egbetokun described the conference as a vital national platform for enhancing police–public communication, shaping constructive national narratives and deepening public trust. He noted that modern policing increasingly depends on transparency and credible communication, making the role of PPROs central to sustaining institutional integrity.

The IGP warned of the growing dangers posed by misinformation, disinformation and perception-driven conflicts, stressing that information management has become an operational priority for the Nigeria Police Force. He urged PPROs to “dominate the information space with truth, clarity and professionalism,” and to adopt proactive and timely communication strategies rather than reacting after damage is done.

While encouraging effective use of social media to promote transparency, he cautioned that communication lapses create “narrative vacuums” frequently exploited by misinformation actors. He directed PPROs across commands and formations to respond swiftly to misleading content the moment it emerges, emphasising that falsehood must not be allowed to gain traction.

Declaring the conference open, Egbetokun expressed confidence that the sessions would strengthen strategic communication and improve the public image of the Nigeria Police Force. He called for renewed commitment to professionalism, integrity and excellence, noting that effective engagement remains central to the future of policing.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including representatives of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the National Institute of Police Studies, the Police Community Relations Committee, development partners and civil society organisations.
